Frequently Asked Questions
What is the 99% Angels?
The 99% Angels is a community that provides startup education, connections and opportunities that are often difficult for everyday investors to discover.
What is In Small, Out Big?
The playbook for the 99% Angels. A plain-English, slightly snarky Substack for everyday investors who want to understand the startup game before they decide to play. “In Small” means investing with $500 or less. “Out Big” means getting back 50, 100, 500 times your money or more. (There are no guarantees, obviously.)
Most of the posts are short, some are very short, and some have math. But give it a shot, I think you’ll like it even if you have no intention of ever putting a dime into a startup.
Is joining the waitlist an investment?
No. Joining the waitlist is not an investment. It’s not an offer to sell securities or a solicitation to buy securities. There is no obligation to invest.
Will my information be shared?
You will not get spammed, and we do not plan to sell or share waitlist information or any individual investment information with third parties for marketing or any other purpose. See the Privacy page for details.
What happens next if I join 99% Angels?
There’s no obligation to invest, you’ll simply join others in the 99% Angels waitlist who are curious to see/hear more. Once we get going, here's what will happen:
We’re forming cohorts of 100 people at a time. Once your cohort is full, you’ll start getting access to live startup pitches, interviews with successful entrepreneurs and venture investors and other good stuff. So invite your friends! Again, if you only like to watch, we’re good with that.
After each live pitch, we’ll have Q&A then collect investment interest. If your cohort gets to $50,000 or more in commitments, we’ll make the investment. Any less than that and we’re too small to get any meaningful dialogue with founders as their company grows.
We’ll aim to show 2-3 startup investment opportunities per month. We have deal flow from a number of different sources, but you can also bring startups to us. For example, if you’re an alumnus of just about any college in the world, your school probably has a student/faculty startup competition. Check it out.
Your investment info will be available in a private, secure folder. Also pitchdecks, Q&A, quarterly reports from companies and valuation updates.
Will every member be eligible for every opportunity?
Probably not. Future opportunities may be subject to legal, regulatory, financial, residency and other eligibility requirements.
Are there other ways to get involved in angel investing?
Look, if you want to invest in startups, but don’t think the 99% Angels is for you, I won’t be crushed. But do me (and yourself) a favor and join some other organized group like AngelList or WeFunder. That way you’re building a portfolio, not just jumping at your brother-in-law’s one-off Rent-A-Chicken business.
